Question by : Should Sport Go Out for Sports?
My daughter, Sport, is nine, and she is thinking of becoming a soccer player at school. She got a little newsletter thing at school today for something called "Soccer Camp" where the kids go to a four hour a day thing over the summer, five days a week, and pretty much play soccer.
I would love for Sport to play soccer, but it costs 65 dollars a week, and she's more of a girly-girl. She hates to get dirty or wet, and is extremely shy right now.
Should I let her do it? Why or why not?

Thanks!

Best answer:

Answer by cardicorgi
All children should be exposed to playing sports. But there could be a less expensive way. The town I live in has a boys and girls club that offers team sports for all ages at a reasonable price. The fear is she would want to quit after the first day. If she is willing to try, go for it. Just have an understanding with her that she would need to see it thru. Setting up a reward system would help with that.

Question by Baby Girl Sara, is on her way!: Can you believe that the show "HUGE" has been CANCELLED?!?!?
I'm so mad at ABC Family for doing this! I can't believe that they have cancelled the show. They said its due to low ratings. That people don't watch it like they watch the other shows. I can understand that, but if they would have put it in a different time slot I can gurantee that people would watch it!

HUGE was a great show because it was true real talk about teens, obese teens and the problems that they encounter along the way, including "fat camp". There are MORE obese teens and adults out there then pregnant teens. Why would they continue to show The Secret Life of the American Teenager when you KNOW that most of that mess isn't real, but cancel HUGE . . . the only thing that was real!

I would LOVE input on this. Say what you want but HUGE was a good show!
It may have "sucked" if you weren't suffering with the problem, but for those of us who could relate understood every part of it.

I LOVE the Secret Life of the American Teenager, but in NO WAY does it tell a TRUE story about a pregnant teenager. At least HUGE was real.

Best answer:

Answer by Alabaster
its ok, because the show was a huge mistake to begin with

Question by A_man_you_dont_know_the_name_of: Any tennis summer "camps" in or near Belmont, NH?
Okay I recently watched a tennis match and I really liked the sport so I started playing but my school doesn't have a tennis team, I'm 13 years old in 8th grade going into 9th and I would like to know any summer tennis camps for starters to learn tennis basics and all that in or near Belmont, New Hampshire. When I say "camps" I mean just like somewhere where you can learn about tennis and all the rules that's preferably 3, 4 hours a day and a day or two a week for a couple of weeks I just don't want a one time thing. I also do not want to pay over $ 50, if its over but by a little its okay.

Best answer:

Answer by Track911
Dude, you seriously don't know much about tennis if you are going to be asking such for something so difficult. Tennis "camps" are always over five hundred dollars, at least the high-end ones, the "low-end" ones are to train with a coach and even that way you have to pay high bills per hour with them. It's great that you are getting prepared for the High School level tennis, but know that tennis is a very expensive sport.

Let me do a quick run-through of the costs:
Penn balls to use for a year, now considering you do not free load off others for balls then you will spend around 200-500 a year if you play the entire year. If you do freeload then that will be reduced to 50-75.
Shoes are normally 50 dollars or more to buy.
Tennis apparel for mens or boys in your case might range you a good 100
Tennis racket will hit you hard once and let you keep the racket for a long time
Now depending on the string you use, I suggest Prince Synthetic Gut, you are looking at a nice 40 dollars to top that off if you use the string I suggested (I know my strings cost me 40 every two to three weeks)
Even the cheapest player, if you are serious about the sport will spend approximately 500-1000 dollars a year on the sport.

My point of all this is that you should consider the costs and if you are really serious about the sport, expect to pay much more than 50 dollars. However, if you would like to be like the JV Boys I see at my school, using a grand daddy old racket then go for it. But I'm saying now, new racket, good shoes, appropriate clothing, and good bouncy tennis balls are a key to success.

ALL IN ALL, if you do not like to read the facts of tennis then just know that for now, you should go to the school you want to go to for high school and hit there. If you have a family member then awesome, but if you find someone from the actual tennis team ask to hit with them. You don't need to go to a tennis camp to get better, just get someone who is better than you to help you out =)

Question by jenna: My half sister could really benefit from "fat camp" but how do we brooch the subject and be sensitive?
I'm much older than she is. I'm in my 30's and she just turned 11 and is going into the sixth grade next year. She really needs to lose weight. She won't exercise or eat healthy so it's more than just genetics. She'll be going to a new shool next year and I'd like to see her go back with confidence. Have you heard of any good camps that are fun and not too strict? We live in Michigan but could go to Michingan, Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, or Wisconsin. HOW DO I ASK HER IF SHE'D BE INTERESTED WITHOUT HURTING HER FEELINGS? She knows she's overweight but she needs people with experience dealing with overweight youth. And is a whole summer just too long for a 11 year old? There was a show on MTV called "Fat Camp", wasn't there? Should I watch some episodes with her? When is it on? PLEASE HELP! I want her to nip this problem in the bud before it gets too bad. Also, she really acts out to try to be in with the "cool" kids and I think she may start doing sexual stuff (cont'd)
or drugs/alcohol thinking that this will make people like her (I did this because I had low self esteem, I was a bit older though). She is very developed for her age and could pass for 15. She's tall and will always be "thick" but could really lose 30 or so pounds. Thanks for any advice!

Best answer:

Answer by Dest
I'm going to say this as a person who is obese.

Tell her straight out. Tell her why, the medical side, the social side, the problems she faces.

Tell her you don't mean to offend her, but you are actually concerned about her and her health and you don't want her to spiral into depression

Question by CoraAnn: Anyone have an idea or know of where I can find a funny skit for high school students to perform?
Coming up pretty soon is "Fish Camp" at my high school. Its where the new incoming freshman come with their families to pick up schedules, meet new teachers, take a tour of the school, and join different clubs and organizations. Since I am the president of our drama club this year I have to come up with some kind of skit to perform with my fellow members for all the freshman and their families. I want it to be preferably a comedy to get the freshman interested in theater. It would be really cool if the skit was about like the first day of high school or something like that. I'm so excited but I need help getting started! If you have any ideas please post! Anything will help. Thanks!!

Best answer:

Answer by Theatre 'N Dance
Oh, for the first day of high school? Possibly purchase the script "13 the Musical". It's about the struggles/nervousness/exciting times of being a teen, and it's VERY funny. Hope I helped!

Question by : What should my book be called?
My friend says I should call it S.O.H.E.C., but I'm wondering if atone can come up with anything else. Here's the prologue: You know, we have a pretty good set up here. Unless of course we recall the fact that our parents had a place where they could dump their kids for most of their life and only have to pay $ 1000 for everything. That's what happened to me. I barely remember my parents. They left me here when I was a very young child. But I'm not sad about it because I hardly knew them.
Where we are is hard to explain to an outsider. It's like a cross between boarding school and summer camp, except that we're there for life. We have separate cabins for boys and girls, just like camp, where there are bunk beds and only four showers so we all have to stand and wait. Also, there's a school, a Sports/Fitness building,a pool, a movie theater, and a few other things included to make our lives seem ''more like home''. There's also a huge cafeteria right in the middle of "camp", but judging by what I've seen on T.V., the food here is probably better than some summer camp or school cafeteria. Our "camp-school" is called S.O.H.E.C. which stands for School Of Highly Educated Children. We actually aren't any more educated than the rest of the kids in this world, they only named it that so the place wouldn't get shut down by people who feel children shouldn't live like this. Well truthfully, were not exactly "children", as this place is mostly filled with people age 12 and up. The reason this is so is because parents felt their children were not cute anymore or they could not afford the time or money to raise them. It sounds sad but its actually kind of fun because there's more kids here than adults and every kid at least once in their life has wished for that- a kids paradise!
But we have something that most summer camps or boarding schools do not have. Our camp is split right down the middle! The "two" camps are exact replicates, sitting right next to each other. This is because we're mortal enemies. The two sides of S.O.H.E.C. are called ¨The Rattlesnake Pack¨ and ¨The Coyote Pack¨. I'm in the Coyote Pack. The reason for our mutual hatred for each other is a long back story I don't have time to get into, involving the two brothers who started this organization and their constant disagreements with each other.
Today is the first day our school goes back in session. We have just finished our summer break, which did not include leaving S.O.H.E.C., because we really have no place to go, nor are we allowed to leave. Today will be my first day of high school. I actually should have been in high school last year and so should have my friend Lauren, but they had to hold us back in preschool because we refused to color anything; and that included painting as well. Usually kids are shy or frightened on the first day of high school, but I'm not. I grew up with all these people and I don't have to worry about my friends going to a different school because there's only one. Well, at least there's only school on the Coyote side. There is one on the Rattlesnake side as well.
So, likely any second now, the alarm clock will ring, someone will groan, someone will roll over and accidentally fall out of bed, and when I walk through the hallway to go brush my teeth, I'll get my daily cheery greeting from Penny, the one who is always happy no matter what. Ah, S.O.H.E.C.

Answer by Bianca
I think S.O.H.E.C is a great title for your story, but if you do not like that title then maybe you can use the name of the main character as the title. Another title might be "The Coyote Pack" or something like that. When i write stories, i think of the whole plot and try to describe it in 1 or 2 words and that is how i create a title.

Ps. I really like your story!

Hey everyone, I'm a "camp counselor" at this little day program at an elementary school. We have access to a cafeteria, gym, playground and field. My kids get extremely rowdy. Can anyone suggest a game that will be fun/engaging for them that will make them extremely tired? I've tried army/navy (you know where you run from one side to the other) but they didn't seem to like that. Capture the flag and variations of dodge ball are the ones we always use. Any other suggestions? Thanks!
